Montblanc 1858 Automatic - A Historic Design With A Sporty Feel
The Montblanc 1858 Automatic was released a few years ago and is part of a larger collection of models from the German brand that includes everything from chronographs and diving watches to monopuchers and GMT models.
History
Despite the collection's vintage-inspired design, the models have many typical sporty features, such as durable and waterproof cases, which makes this watch a versatile one. The design is inspired by 1920s and 1930s models that the iconic company Minerva produced. Minerva was bought by Richemont in 2006, which is the same company that owns Montblanc.
Design
The Montblanc 1858 Automatic is an entry-level model from this collection and has a simpler complication where the date window and seconds hand is not found on the dial, which we like! It gives the watch a minimalist design and a nice symmetrical dial. A dial that has a deep blue color which is one of the highlights of this model, and the blue theme also appears on the ceramic bezel and leather strap.
Also found on the dial is a historic logo taken from Montblanc's archive of logos used only on a selection of their vintage-inspired models. A slightly sportier side is also revealed here, where luminova has been used on the delicious cathedral hands and the arabic index markings.
The model has a diameter of 40 mm with a case that is mainly brushed but has a few polished parts, including the edges of the lugs and the crown. Nothing else would really suit this model, which has its roots in military watches with a pilot-style design, which comes traditionally with unpolished cases. The water resistance is a whopping 100 meters, which we cannot say is unusual for a sportier watch, but it is certainly less common in this type of vintage-inspired model that also sits on a blue calf leather strap with white stitching. This makes the Montblanc 1858 Automatic even more versatile to wear and can even be a 'one watch collection piece'.
Movement
On the case back, we see an engraved mountain which is of course 'Mont Blanc', the highest mountain in Europé. Under the case we find the movement; caliber MB 24.15, which has a 38-hour power reserve and is a modified sellita SW200-1.
If you are looking for a durable and sportier watch but still want a more classic look with a leather strap, look no further than the Montblanc 1858 Automatic.
