Five Unique Watches Under $2000
Here we look at five watches, many of them with dive specifications, but all of them are unique, from two different brands, and all are under $2000.
The Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Diver
This is an interesting watch from Nivada, not only because of its cool looks and specs, but also because it's a totally new watch. Compared to Nivada Grenchens other big collections, this watch has no heritage model from which it has taken its inspiration from.
The 38 mm case has a classic round shape that is polished on the sides, and the watch has no crown guards, which usually comes in a diving watch. This is not a dive watch but comes with some of the dive watch specifications, such as 200 meters of water resistance and a screw-down crown.
One cool detail is that all hands and markers on the watch and on the bezel have lume in them. Inside the case, we find a Soprod movement lasting around 38 hours. It's a Swiss movement with, 28800 vph, and it is a standard movement, meaning it's a workhouse! This is a really nice model that's different from many other dive-inspired models on the market. The bezel is free-flowing bidirectional, and the only variations in the different models are the different steel bracelets you can choose from and the rubber strap.
Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster
Have you ever seen a deep diver watch with a water resistance up to 1000 meters in a 38 mm case? We haven't, until we got our hands on this cool Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster. If we compared this to the Antarctic Diver, it's a bit bigger on the wrist, which can be because of the squarish case. One big difference is also that this watch is actually based on a historic Nivada Grenchen model.
The Depthmaster also resembles a bit a Panerai Radiomir (the non-crown guard version). The lugs are one design detail that stick out a bit; it almost seems like they're not designed for this watch, but it actually works design-wise. That can also be said about the four playful index markers at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. The bezel, which has a great action and sound, is made of steel, which makes this watch feel like a true tool watch and maybe one of the best mechanical tool watches that have been released recently. We don't recommend anyone to dive with mechanical dive watches, but If we compare this against the Antarctic Diver, it will probably be a bit easier to see the time on the dial.
Unimatic Modello Uno U1S-PD5
Unimatic is mostly known for its minimalistic design, with its brushed cases, and limited editions, as well as the company's refusal to use index markings and arabic numerals. Here, though, that has changed a bit. It is limited, to 500 psc, so there is no difference there, but they have put index markings on the bezel, so even if it has the famous Unimatic Uno case, it looks a lot more like a regular dive watch and therefor less minimalistic.
The bezel action is also different, to Unimatic watches and also other dive watches from other brands. It sounds a bit military like, which you also can hear if you watch our video.
The Unimatic Modello Uno U1S-PD5 has a 41.5 mm case and a water resistance up to 500 meters. If you prefer a steel bracelet, that is an option for this watch.
Unimatic Modello Uno U1S-8N
The Unimatic Modelo Uno U1S-8N is a great new release that has a bluish color on the dial and blue bezel without index markings, so this is not a watch you should dive with!
On the dial, we find cream-colored hands with gold edges and a bezel that sounds a bit more refined than the previous U1S-PD5 model. If you are interested of the sound of it, please watch the video above. The watch has a 41.5 mm case size, 300 meters of water resistance, and is limited to 400 pieces.
Unimatic Modello Duo U2S-8N
You can call this the younger brother or sister to the previous Unimatic Modello Uno U1S-8N. It has 300 meters of water resistance and a screw-down crown, but it lacks many of the other specifications that a dive watch should have, such as a dive bezel. The case is 40 mm and has a boat shape to it, which you can feel a bit on the wrist, but it's mostly visual.
Truly Unique Watches
All these three Unimatic watches have Sellita movements, which is nice. One downside is the plastic/rubber straps, which are a bit hard, and feels more like harder plastic than of rubber. If you buy any of these Unimatic models though, a nato strap is included.
Both Nivada Grenchen and Unimatic offer here cool watches but, one thing with Unimatic that is fascinating is that their watches are truly unique. The company has only been here for 8–9 years, and in that time they have built up a brand that sell out limited edition watches, where almost every model is different from each other. We also have a hard time to see any other famous watch designs in Unimatic models, which is rare and a big accomplishment for Unimatic.
