Do you have a watch you want to sell? Here is our best advice for you!
Selling a used watch as a private person can unfortunately be complicated, and the more the watch is worth, the more risky the selling process is. Everything from deciding which sales platform to use to how to handle payments can be difficult.
We at Fredmans have extensive experience with used watches, vintage watches, and exclusive watches. If you are thinking of selling, we are happy to assist you in the process of selling your watch, and here are our best tips for you!
Selling Platform
There are many ways to sell a used watch;
- At various online companies that deal with second hand goods,
- On an auction house,
- Or you can turn to a watchdealer who specializes and deals with pre-owned watches.
There are many ways to sell a used watch, but the various platforms differ greatly, and depending on what kind of watch you are selling, some are better than others.
Selling a watch privately on a website for used products is usually considered the most risky and requires the most work, as you have to respond to all the inquiries and have to handle deliveries, complaints, and potential returns yourself. Being able to be anonymous as a seller is also important and something to think about with this approach which we generally do not recommend.
Chrono24 is one of the largest online platforms for buying and selling used and new watches. It is an excellent platform as it is comprehensive, but as a private person, there can still be some difficulties and risks with Chrono24. Questions such as: Is the buyer reliable? Do you need to send the watch abroad and is the delivery then insured? How do you handle returns and what happens if the watch comes back to you in a different condition than you sent it in? There are many things to consider before selling a watch on Chrono24, but if you find the right buyer, it can be worth the risk.
Finally, you can choose to sell a watch at an auction house. If you have a rare and valuable watch, then an auction may be the best way to get the actual price that the watch is worth. You can also in some cases reach out to an international audience and, generally speaking, an auction is one of the safest ways to sell a watch. The disadvantages of auctions are that you do not know when the watch will be sold, the commission fee that both the buyer and the seller pay, and that you do not always manage to get a high price for the watch. If you have an unusual and exclusive watch, an auction can be the best platform to use.
Selling a watch shouldn't be risky!
Selling a watch comes with its risks. It is usually safer to sell to a company than to a private person, but there are several other aspects to consider. To begin with, the sales platform as mentioned is of utmost importance, and each sales platform comes with different opportunities and difficulties. On larger platforms such as Chrono24, ratings or reviews can be of great importance, and on smaller ones in Sweden such as Klocksnack, recommendations can be extra important when you are talking directly to other private individuals. Regardless of the platform, you should avoid direct encounters as much as possible and never meet a buyer in an unsafe place. Trusting your gut feeling is a piece of advice we often give.
The quality of the watch
Another concern when selling watches is to describe the watch correctly so that the buyer does not feel misled and risk returns or complaints. Here it is always good to describe when the watch was purchased or the year it was created, any service history, if it has been polished, what was done during the service, and if it got box and papers. Providing clear images of the watch is also important when selling a watch.

We can offer different solutions that suit you!
Depending on what needs you have as a seller, we can help you in the process through our various sales options. Our motto is to make the process as easy as possible for you and still give you the highest value for your watch! We offer three options for you who want to sell your watch with us: Commission, Exchange for a new watch, and Direct Sale.
1. When we sell a watch on commission, it often gives the seller, you, the highest price. You only get paid after the watch is sold, which can sometimes take a while, which is good to keep in mind.
2. We can also exchange your watch. You can then buy a new watch from our stock in our store that corresponds to the trade-in value of your used watch.
3. We also offer to buy the watch directly from you where you get paid quickly, but this option gives you a lower price than if we sell the watch on commission or trade it in.
We know our pre-owned watches and sell both more modern models but also vintage watches. We also have an authorized appraiser who can give you an accurate valuation of your watch. Feel free to call us or email us with some information about your watch that you want to sell and we'll get back to you as soon as we can!
