Peter Behrens, an architect, painter, designer, and typographer, is considered a pioneer of modern industrial design. Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier, among others, worked in his Berlin office. Together, they realized renowned buildings such as the German Embassy in St. Petersburg and the IG Farben office in Frankfurt am Main. In 1926, Behrens designed the style-defining New Ways residential building in Northampton. His works mark the transition from Art Nouveau to the rationalism of the Bauhaus period. He combined architecture, art, and craftsmanship, shaped industrial series production, and, as a consultant to the AEG company, created the first complete corporate identity. As a professor, he shaped generations of architects and designers.
