Do you collect watches? Here are our 4 best tips for you:
Do you have an interest in starting to collect watches? Or maybe you've already been collecting watches for a while? Regardless of where you are in your watch collecting, here we have collected our best tips for you!
Start Small With Iconic Models
Iconic watches are classics for a reason. They often have a timeless design that won't go out of style in the near future. These are therefore watches that retain their value fairly well over time. Of course, it's most important to buy a model you want from a brand you like, but if you like an iconic model or a 'classic', that's a good start to a watch collection. Iconic models are watches that are recognized by both the mass market as well as collectors and are both relatively easy to buy and the same to sell.
Examples of iconic models are the Cartier Tank, Rolex Datejust, Omega Seamaster, Jaeger Le Coultre Reverso, and even the Seiko SKX (even cheaper watches can be iconic).
Collect Different Types Of Watches
Many different types of watches are made to be used for different occasions. Some of the most common are diver's watches, dress watches, sporty watches, and pilot's watches. As a collector, you often have a feeling for what type of watch you are interested in, but if you are unsure, we have some tips that we have gathered through years of meeting watch collectors:
- Depending on your lifestyle, different types of watches may suit you better than others. If you often wear a shirt or suit and rarely wear your watch when you exercise or are physically active, dressy watches or more elegant everyday watches are recommended.
- If you are often out in the woods, or exercise outside, diving watches or more durable sporty watches may suit you best.
- If you have a varied lifestyle where one day you can wear a suit and the next day maybe play golf outdoors, a diver's watch and a dress watch may be needed. Another good option could be to buy a durable everyday watch that covers most of your needs, such as a Rolex Datejust or a Longines Spirit.
Good Relationship With Dealers and Retailers
Having a good relationship with dealers and watch retailers helps a lot if you collect watches. Necessary help when servicing the watches you own and potential future help when you in the future want to sell a watch goes a long way. If you are looking for a special watch, a dealer who deals in pre-owned watches can also be of great help in finding what you are looking for.
Storage
When you buy new watches, you usually get a rather large watch box with the purchase, and in some cases also when you buy used watches. These watch boxes can be of good quality, but collecting watches in them is rarely a good solution as after a while they take up more space than you can handle, and keeping track of which watch is in which watch box is not the easiest.
Here comes a larger watch case that can hold anywhere from three to up to ten or twelve watches into the picture. There is a large selection of watch boxes/cases on the market in different materials and designs.
Here are some examples of affordable watch cases in good quality that we sell at Fredmans:
The safety of your watches is also a good thing to consider if you collect watches. A small safe that is approved by your insurance company can be a good investment. That your watches are also then insured is a prerequisite for protecting your watches from theft and damage.
